With the guiding philosophy that “We are all Distant Relatives,” we aim to make our guests feel entirely welcome, respected and at home, intertwined within an environmentally & socially conscious model of living.

Sitting above the emerald waters of Kilifi Lagoon, Distant Relatives Ecolodge & Backpackers is a magical and affordable award-winning Ecolodge, Bar & Restaurant, Events Venue, Creative Hub, Educational Space, and a Digital Nomad paradise.

The project was initiated in 2010 when co-founders Tom and Romain embarked on a journey from Addis Ababa to Cape Town. During their travels, they had the opportunity to visit Kilifi, where they encountered a diverse group of passionate artists, activists, and community builders.

The tranquility, unspoiled natural beauty, and warm hospitality of the locals, combined with the simplicity of life in Kilifi, deeply resonated with Tom and Romain. Inspired by these experiences, they made the decision to establish Kilifi as their home and the birthplace of the project known as Distant Relatives.

Meticulously integrated into the natural environment, every space and accommodation at Distant Relatives has been thoughtfully designed over the years with immense care and affection, prioritizing your comfort and serenity while minimizing our ecological impact wherever possible.

We try to tell you the story of our appreciation for local culture, we give you a taste of our beautiful coastline and blend in the story of our community and our travels.
